Meta is Limiting Links: Here's the Scoop

We're starting to see this happen to business owners so wanted to make sure everyone knew what's coming. Meta may be making it harder—and more expensive—for small businesses to send people away from Facebook (i.e. putting your website link in a post).

Some business pages operating in Professional Mode or non-verified business pages are beginning to see limits on how often they can include links in their posts. After reaching the limit (only two posts per month can contain a link), a Facebook pop-up may appear asking the account to upgrade or pay in order to continue adding links. This change hasn’t rolled out to everyone yet, so keep trying—but it may eventually affect more business accounts.

Why is Meta doing this? Simply put, Facebook would rather keep users on its platform than send them to your website, online store, event registration, or another destination. If your business regularly posts links to drive traffic elsewhere, this could become an important change to watch.

What are businesses doing right now? Many are posting their regular content without a link and then dropping the link in the comments. You may have noticed several news organizations doing this already. If you're running into this restriction and need to share a link, put it in the first comment to your post.

Interestingly, personal profiles in Classic Mode don’t appear to be widely affected yet. That could be because personal profiles typically aren’t used as heavily for regular business-related link posting.

And before you immediately upgrade to a premium Meta Verified subscription, consider the cost. Some higher-tier plans can be expensive, especially for a small business. Depending on your goals, that money may be better spent on Facebook ads, where you have more control over who sees your content and where they go next.

Keep posting links while you still can, watch for any new limits or upgrade prompts, and have a backup strategy ready. Meta’s rules continue to evolve—and our small businesses will need to evolve with them. If you've still got questions, we can help.
